QR Codes on Mylar Bags: A Practical Guide for Brands

QR codes turn every pouch into a digital touchpoint — recipes, lab results, loyalty programs, lot traceability. Here's how to print them so they actually scan.

QR codes have quietly become one of the most useful pieces of real estate on a custom mylar bag. They turn a static pouch into a digital channel — a recipe page, a lot-traceability lookup, a lab-results PDF for cannabis or supplements, or a loyalty signup. Here's how to use them well.

What QR codes work for on a pouch

  • Lab results and COAs — especially for cannabis, supplements, and specialty foods
  • Lot traceability — link each batch to harvest date, sourcing, and quality data
  • Recipes and usage guides — for spices, jerky, baking mixes
  • Loyalty and reorder — direct customers from the bag to your subscription page
  • Brand storytelling — link to a video, founder note, or behind-the-scenes content
  • Reorder shortcuts — preload the cart with the SKU on a customer's previous purchase

Print-quality requirements

QR codes either work or they don't. The thresholds:

  • Minimum size: 0.8" × 0.8" for general scanning. Smaller works in lab tests but fails on real-world phone cameras under retail lighting.
  • Minimum quiet zone: 4 modules of clear space around the code (roughly 10% of the code's width).
  • Color contrast: dark code on light background. Reverse (light on dark) often fails to scan reliably; if you must reverse, test extensively before mass production.
  • Avoid placing over a pouch seal or fold — scanning angles get unreliable.

Print location

Place QR codes on a flat, unobstructed area of the pouch. The back panel works well for recipe and brand-content QR codes; the side gusset or bottom is better for traceability codes that don't compete for visual attention. Avoid placing codes near the zipper or tear notch — those areas distort during use.

Dynamic vs static codes

Static QR codes encode a specific URL forever. They're free to generate and never break, but you can't change where they point.

Dynamic QR codes encode a redirect URL that you control through a service like Bitly or QR Code Generator. You can change the destination, track scan analytics, A/B test landing pages, and retire campaigns — all without reprinting your bag. For most brands, dynamic codes are worth the small monthly fee.

Tracking and ROI

If you're investing in custom-printed packaging, QR codes give you the only direct measurement of how often your pouch drives a digital action. Track:

  • Scan volume by SKU
  • Scan volume by retailer (using UTM parameters)
  • Conversion rate from scan → email signup or repeat purchase

This data is the bridge between a packaging investment and measurable brand growth.

Common mistakes

  • Over-stylizing the code with logos in the center — causes scan failures
  • Printing too small to look "clean" — kills scan reliability
  • Linking to a homepage instead of a purpose-built landing page
  • Forgetting a fallback URL printed near the code for users who don't scan
